Crispy Portobello Fries coated in Panko with your choice of tomato sauce or dipping sauce you love, then baked or fried to a crispy appetizer perfection.

Fried mushrooms are everywhere on menus in the Midwest and I've only had them twice when visiting there and fell in love instantly.

I was so happy to recreate what I remembered in taste, they are truly super easy, and as a snack for mushroom lovers, you will love these.

The best part about this recipe is you can deep fry, air fry or bake them and we got all those instructions waiting for you, enjoy!

Cooking Methods

  1. Air fry: preheat the basket for 5 minutes at 400 degrees that have been lightly coated with oil. Air fry until crispy around 8 to 10 minutes
  2. Pan fry: heat the oil to 350 degrees pan fry until lightly golden brown turning once
  3. Baked: heat the oven to 375 degrees hot oven until browned and crispy around 35 minutes.
  4. Note: spray with cooking oil before air frying or baking cooking method

Ingredients for Portabello Fries:

  • portabello mushrooms sliced lengthwise for long cuts 
  • egg whites or whole egg 
  • flour 
  •  granulated garlic powder
  • oregano
  • dried parsley
  • salt and pepper to taste pinch of cayenne
  • Italian flavored panko bread crumbs
  • grated cheese
  • parchment paper
  • olive oil or cooking spray
  • marinara or dipping sauce you prefer

Portabello Fries

Portabello Fries

Portabello mushrooms cut into strips coated with breadcrumbs and baked until crispy, great served with tomato sauce.
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 35 MinTotal time: 45 Min

Ingredients

  • 1- 8 oz package of portabello mushrooms sliced lengthwise for long cuts
  • 1/2 cup egg whites or 1 beaten egg and water to make 1/2 cup
  • season 1/4 cup of flour with:
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons granulated garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • pinch of cayenne
  • 2 cups Italian flavored panko bread crumbs and 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese,
  • Place in a large plastic bag set aside
  • parchment paper
  • Olive oil

Instructions

  1. Clean and wash mushrooms taking the furry side off gently scraping with a sharp knife, and cutting the middle off.
  2. Slice lengthwise like french fries with a sharp knife.
  3. Place mushrooms that are damp from being washed into the seasoned flour mixture.
  4. In the bowl with the egg mixture dip the mushrooms in the egg and then shake into the bag of seasoned panko bread crumb and cheese mixture.
  5. Keep adding the mushrooms in the zip lock bag shaking till well coated.
  6. Put them on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
  7. Drizzle them all with olive oil lightly over the tops of the mushroom fries and bake a 375-degree hot oven until browned and crispy around 35 minutes.
  8. Serve plain, with marinara sauce, blue cheese dressing, or alfredo sauce.
